Seattle’s Garbage Strike

We just checked Seattle Public Utility's site and currently, it states that if Monday is your regular day to put out gargabe, recycle and yard waste, to do so before 7:00 am on Monday.

Monday Waste Management customers should still put their garbage, yard waste and recycling out before 7 a.m. If collections are missed, carts should be put out next Monday, Aug. 6.

Let's hope the collections are not missed! Nothing quite like extra garbage piling up on a summer day.

Happening now in Puget Sound: Tribes canoeing to Puyallup

You may have heard the chants of local tribes canoeing on their journey to Puyallup this morning. These multitades of canoes from various NW tribes is all part of "Paddle to Squaxin 2012". Here is a video report from Scupper Sr. interviewing members of the Quinault Tribe:

Today's route to Puyallup is highlighted below…

Is it safe for Fido to get in the water?

Numerous articles and publications regarding algae blooms have been circulating throughout local government sites and are now making their way around local West Seattle veterinarian clinics. Now that our family has added a virtual land seal (Scupper Jr.) to the pack, I figured it was wise to know more about the safety of dog paddling along our Beach Drive shores.

This bulletin (commonly found in many states) has stirred up some confusion as to the safety of pets swimming in or around the algae blooms commonly seen on our marine beaches. As far as I can tell, these warnings are targeted specifically for lakes, ponds, rivers and non-moving estuaries. ALTHOUGH, I do have major reservations letting our pup thrash around in the colorful Puget Sound soup known as Noctiluca.

According to reports, The Washington Department of Ecology is still uncertain what else may be included in the unprecedented amount of recent algae blooms…

"They know for sure they have large amounts of common Noctiluca algae, which looks like tomato soup, but they have not identified several other strains they observed."

Conclusion: Your pets are likely to be just fine after swimming around these blooms but until I hear more, it's "Scupper, leave it!"

Crime: UPS Package and Car Ransacked and Seattle Night Out

We received this message via Facebook yesterday:

WARNING!!!! We live on Jacobsen Road and came home to my package delivered from UPS open and item stolen. Be aware of mail thieves and package thieves.

And learned from another neighbor by Jacobsen/Beach Drive that their car was ransacked….nothing was stolen because nothing was left to steal.  However the creeps left the glove box open and it was apparent someone had gone through the car looking for valuables.

Seattle Night Out is less than a month away on August 7th – let's have a HUGE turn out. If you're planning a SNO around Beach Drive, please comment and let us know or send me a private email.
